The Great Gray Owl is the tallest owl species in North America (approximately 22 inches) and has a 5' wingspan. It lives in northern coniferous forests, often around bogs. During some winters, there are large "flights" of this species into the boreal forests of the northern United States. These flights are usually associated with a decline in voles (the preferred prey of this magnificent owl species) in Canadian boreal forests.
